Ten Game-Changing Technology Shifts for 2012

Here we list down 10 shifts that one will see in the Technology space the coming year

1.   Focus on people than IT

Over the years, the value and importance of People has slowly sunk in. The way information is perceived, the end users, the ones who are actually using the software are who make a difference and so will become the key focus for corporate and technology leaders. Activities, events will be planned keeping in mind these People, the influencers and those who ultimately add value to the service offered.  Starting with the person who greets you as you walk into an office to the person who signs off an approval, they will earn their due in 2012.

2. Visibility and interactions

With the advent of Smart phones and tablets, the year of 2011 was very good for the Technology arena. But, 2012 will see a revolution take place with reference to how businesses and transactions are carried out. New touch based interactions, simple edits on the tablet’s screen, and of course the many other portable devices out in the market have changed how we do business. Gone are the days when the PC or laptop was required to reply to emails and carry out elaborate actions, now everything is done with the click of a button or press of a key. The services are all now termed as “apps” and people no longer look for download sites, but head towards the virtual market available in each of the smart phones and tablets. The kind of media one can play or use on these devices is also a reason for this transition to become more common in the coming days.

3. Small does matter.

The year ahead will have people focusing on small services rather than the enterprise range development processes and systems. The size of the solutions might be small, but these will be the ones making all the difference. These services will present new issues and challenges, but with the smaller and limited number of services available, it will be worth it all.  These are related to the App stores that are available on all the smart phones and tablets of today.

 4. User drives it all

With the growing number of social networking websites, it has become clear that people are driving force behind these. These platforms allow them to interact with others, almost face to face, giving it a human feel. So, talking about Web 2.0, the technology is content specific and the end user is who defines how it performs. The networks and websites are all creating content and aspects, features based on the interactions and what the people are looking for.

5. Data Data Data, keep it simple and small.

With the emphasis on being noticed, the importance of the SEO, Search engines has become vital and will increase with the coming year. The information provided on the web, the usefulness aspect of it and the plethora of data available are all what will define the Technology of 2012.

6. Go the Cloud way

Holding to data, watching the client’s server space are all a thing of the past. Now, everything is either on the web or up in the clouds, pun unintended. Cloud computing has taken over the world and it is going to spread like forest fire in the coming years. With information that is valuable, people are all leaning towards this form of computing to help them preserve the data. Using the web or the cloud, it has become evident that applications and information will be saved up for years to come, either to be accessed by the users on need or for a later purpose!

7. Methods that changed

Keeping it small and simple is the key word for the coming year. The whole approach to development and scripting is making a shift from the traditional to agile development. The time spent in the development and implementation process will be a direct reflection on the time the whole thing will remain in service. But, if one was to look at cutting down on the time of the process, they can still manage to lengthen the time spent with that service. Something like Force.com is what we will see in 2012.

8. Next gen cloud based data centers

There is a drastic shift from today’s traditional IT surroundings to going towards the cloud with time. This is also a reflection on how people are changing their attitude towards the environment, both literally and virtually. Many of the It environment processes are taking towards Going green, which means less paper, and less elaborate data centers. Now, the environment and enterprise data are all taken to the cloud, and processes are simplified. This not only saves time, but also ensures the processes are secure.

9. Go Mobile

Nobody wants to spend time reading through long elaborate documents and manuals. People are now relying on their mobile phones and smart phones to give them the experience and information they require. Givng updates on the go, connecting to 3G or an available Wi-fi is the new mantra. The Blackberry, Android phones, and ofcourse the iPhone have taken over the world, making it easy for people to carry out all their transactions, business and personal work on the go. This is such a shift from the traditional, spend time on a computer, connect to the internet via dial up and see how the work pans out system. The cloud computing, and smart phone arena have given people more time and the ability to complete their work at a lesser time but at higher speed.  From paying bills, to sending emails, everything is done on the mobile!

10. Security redefined

The buzzword of 2011 has been “Security”. There have been issues of security breach, to how safe is the network and should I be using the server to do business. Data rich development and enterprise environments, firewalls, data centers, and other security software’s have managed to help people keep their data safe and secure. But this is not 100% fool proof, which has had people agitated and worried. Using external server, and VPN connections have brought in the need for high levels of protection for anything done on the net.  This will go towards all the software developments and technology progress across the world.
